Hurricane Helene (September 2024) Recovery Legal Assistance

A toll-free legal aid hotline is available to South Carolina victims of storm-related damage as a result of Hurricane Helene in Abbeville, Aiken, Allendale, Anderson, Bamberg, Barnwell, Catawba Indian Reservation, Cherokee, Chester, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Hampton, Jasper, Kershaw, Laurens, Lexington, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Orangeburg, Pickens, Richland, Saluda, Spartanburg, Union and York counties.

Volunteer South Carolina attorneys are available to help with the following:

  • Insurance claims for medical bills, loss of property, loss of life, etc.
  • New wills and other legal papers lost in the disaster
  • Home repair contracts and contractor fraud
  • Problems with landlords
  • Proof of home ownership
  • FEMA appeals 

Individuals who qualify for assistance will be matched with South Carolina lawyers who have volunteered to provide free legal assistance in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

SC Free Legal Answers is a free online legal advice service provided by the South Carolina Bar that allows low-income South Carolinians to post questions about their civil legal issues and receive answers from volunteer attorneys. Eligibility guidelines are often expanded to help more people following major disasters.
