When can I get a job?
In South Carolina, there are certain laws that regulate how many hours a teenager can work and what type of work he or she can do. At 14, you are limited to work at a retailer or restaurant as a cashier, errand runner, or retail or grocery bagger. However, you are only allowed to work during certain hours, particularly during the school year. At 16, you can work at most jobs as long as they are not too dangerous. Jobs that are excessively hazardous include manufacturing explosives and operating heavy machinery.
