The International Law Committee is a virtual committee that serves as a forum for advancing South Carolina's integration into the world economy and judicial systems. Its members are leaders in:
* structuring inward investments for foreign corporations;
* supporting one of the world's most efficient cargo and container ports;
* developing and delivering US immigration benefits; and
* pursuing and defending litigation in the transnational setting.
South Carolina's international lawyers are on the forefront of issues effecting the international legal community. In January 2004, the Committee hosted a panel discussion on "Lawyers Engaged in the Fight Against Terrorism," featuring leading lawyers on the forefront of the emerging issues related to the terrorism and money laundering, including: Allan Gerson, co-lead counsel in the PanAm 103 case against Libya; co-lead counsel in the Sept. 11 class action case against Saudi interests; Deborah Pearlstein, anti-terrorism and national security director for Human Rights First; William J. Fox, director of the U.S. Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN); and Daniel Beck-Ohara, financial counselor to the Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States.
In January 2006, the Committee hosted a conference entitled "Your Foreign Law Sabbatical" focusing on opportunities for lawyers to find a means of working in international development, democracy building and Rule of Law programs. More than 100 lawyers and law students attended the conference and heard from representatives of USAID, the World Bank and the American Bar Association which sponsor various programs as well as representatives of major government contractors including Deloitte and the Emerging Markets Group.
The Committee also supports the International Law initiatives of the University of South Carolina School of Law, including the SC Journal of International Law and Business and the Maymester Term for law students at Grays Inn, London. The Committee has published handbook materials for parties interested in the inbound investment opportunities found in South Carolina and has presented numerous workshops for the Bar in order to remain on the forefront of this field of law.
